Abstract

Collaboration between pharmacists and physicians is an important aspect of prescription services to ensure appropriate therapy, safe medication use, and better quality of patient care. This study aims to examine the collaborative relationship between pharmacists and physicians with reference to the McDonough and Doucette collaborative working relationship model, the level of patient satisfaction, and the barriers in prescription services at RSUD Otanaha Gorontalo. An observational method with a qualitative approach was used through in-depth interviews and observation. There were 24 informants, consisting of 7 key informants (pharmacists and physicians) and 17 regular informants (patients). Data were analyzed through data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results show that pharmacist–physician collaboration has been carried out through communication, coordination, and role sharing in prescription services, particularly regarding drug suitability, prescription changes, drug availability, and therapeutic safety, and has progressed from the initial awareness stage to the Professional Relationship Expansion stage. Patient satisfaction was generally good, influenced by the accuracy of drug dispensing, the clarity of drug information, and the services of health workers. However, barriers remain, including limited communication with specialist physicians, a suboptimal drug information system, service waiting times, and the limited involvement of pharmacists in clinical services. In conclusion, pharmacist–physician collaboration in prescription services at RSUD Otanaha Gorontalo has been running well and supports patient satisfaction, but interprofessional communication, the hospital information system, and the role of clinical pharmacists need to be strengthened to improve the effectiveness of collaboration.
