Abstract

Local guides in Sasak Ende, a traditional Sasak hamlet in Sengkol Village, Central Lombok, interpret a living culture of thatched houses, weaving and oral traditions, yet their limited confidence in English and the absence of storytelling-based guiding and service standards restrict the experience they can offer international visitors. Most of these visitors are themselves non-native speakers: in May 2026, 50.5% of foreign arrivals at Lombok International Airport came from ASEAN countries and 31.2% from Europe. This community service programme aims to strengthen the capacity of local guides through English for Tourism training based on storytelling and microlearning. A participatory action approach was used in five stages: socialisation and needs identification, task-based English for Specific Purposes and storytelling training, technology application, on-site mentoring and evaluation, and sustainability building. The programme produced a six-session task-based curriculum, a storytelling guiding script, the English for Tourism Microlearning System (ETMS) comprising mobile microlearning modules, a pocket handbook and bilingual interpretation media, and a six-step experience-based guiding standard operating procedure. Outcomes are measured through pre- and post-tests of guiding performance, a storytelling rubric, observation of guide–tourist interaction and visitor feedback. [Results: to be completed with field data.] The programme offers a replicable model that links language training, cultural interpretation and community-based management in traditional tourism villages.
